The Statistical Properties of (Asphalt) Mixtures December 2016 Saeed Maghsoodloo and Randy West National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT), Auburn University, AL 36849 Abstract In the design of asphalt paving mixtures, aggregates from n stockpiles (generally n = 2, 3, 4, ..., 10) are blended at selected proportions to satisfy specified gradation ranges and other criteria. The mean and variance of any characteristic (such as %-passing through a given sieve) of each aggregate is generally known. In a laboratory environment, the proportion wi (i = 2, 3, ..., 10) from each stockpile is controlled by the mix designer so that the n proportions (or weights) can be assumed fixed. This is unlike a plant operation where aggregates are fed from n bins into a mixing-drum so that the proportion of each aggregate, Wi, from each bin is a random variable. The statistical analyses of the former case is well-know and is first repeated herein in sections 1 and 2, while less accurate information is available about the latter. So, the main objective of this article is to provide more accurate statistical information for the case when aggregate proportions are random variables.

Evaluation of the Mechanical Properties of the cement treated Cold-in-Place Recycled Asphalt Mixtures
Cold-in-place recycling (CIR) is an environmentally sustainable alternative for preservation of asphalt pavements. A major disadvantage of this practice is the lower strength of the cold-in-place mixtures. Addition of cement into this type of mixture is a method for increasing its bearing capacity. The effect of cement content on the mechanical properties of the cold-in-place recycled asphalt m...
متن کاملInvestigating the Properties of Asphalt Concrete Containing Glass Fibers and Nanoclay
The performance of asphaltic pavements during their service life is highly dependent on the mechanical properties of the asphaltic layers. Therefore, in order to extend their service life, scientists and engineers are constantly trying to improve the mechanical properties of the asphaltic mixtures. One common method of improving the performance of asphaltic mixtures is using different types of ...
متن کاملEvaluation of Fatigue Properties of Asphalt Mixtures Containing Reclaimed Asphalt using Response Surface Method
This paper presents the effects of different amounts of reclaimed asphalt on fatigue life of asphalt mixtures. Central composite method was used to design of experiments based on response surface method (RSM). Binder type (Pen 60/70 and Pen 85/100), reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) content (25, 50 and 75%) and loading strain (150, 250 and 350 micro strain) were selected as independent variables...
متن کاملTechnical Effects of Air Cooled Blast Furnace Slag on Asphalt Mixtures
Air cooled blast furnace slag is a by product made of gradually air cooled molten blast furnace slag and is often stored in stockpiles near the iron mills and usually occupy a wide area around the iron mills. From this perspective the further use of these materials can have its own merits. Air cooled blast furnace slag can be used in asphalt mixtures because of their proper frictional propertie...
متن کاملIdentification Effect of Nanoclay on Engineering Properties of Asphalt Mixtures
Nanoclays are new generation of processed clays of interest in a wide range of high performance composites. In other words, nanoclay is defined as a clay that can be modified to make the clay complexes compatible with organic monomers and polymers. Here, it can be said that the polymeric nanocomposites are among the most exciting and promising classes of materials discovered recently. A number ...
